Rye

The Community

The City of Rye has a population of 15,000 and encompasses 5.5 square miles.  It has the distinction of being one of the smallest cities in New York State.  Rye is the oldest permanent settlement in Westchester.  It is the site of several historic landmarks: the John Jay House, a majestic columned mansion which was the original home site and burial place of John Jay, first chief justice of the United States; the Timothy Knapp house, the oldest house in Rye, built in the 1660’s; and the Square House, built in the 1700’s and now a museum.  As a public inn for nearly a century, it housed many historic personages.  George Washington slept here!  Twenty-five miles from Manhattan, the inhabitants of Rye find community in the many available natural, cultural and recreational facilities in the city.
