Port Chester

The Community

Port Chester is a bustling, diverse community of over 28,000 people living within 2.4 square miles along the Long Island Sound and Byram River.  This village borders Rye, Rye Brook and Greenwich, Connecticut.  The village was originally known as Saw Pit for the saw pits which were in use during the time.  Logs to be used for shipbuilding were cut in pits in the ground.  At the time Port Chester incorporated as a village in 1868, it was considered a major seaport.  The Byram River and the Long Island Sound were a key part of the growth and development of Sawpit/Port Chester.  Early residents worked in boat building, farming, and shell fishing.

Port Chester has numerous shopping centers and a busy downtown featuring many international restaurants, creating a vibrant nightlife.   Port Chester has completed major redevelopment of its shopping district, luring in some big box stores.  Longstanding mom-and-pop stores are still perennial favorites with shoppers along Main Street.  The multiplex movie theater in Port Chester draws a big crowd and is a pleasant way to spend the afternoon after a day of shopping.  Port Chester has ample parking at its train station and is a 39-minute express ride to Grand Central Station.
